Your Instructor

Hi I’m Emma,
Head Canicross Instructor at Sporty Paws, Dog Sport Specialist and running buddy to my rescue Collie X Husky, Blue.

With 7 years experience working in the dog industry, 4 of those as a Certified Canicross Trainer coaching pet dogs and their owners in the sport, as well as running a successful, busy dog training business specialising solely in dog sports (not just Canicross!), I can assure you that you’re in safe hands with me as you start your own journey as a Canicross Instructor. I’ll be sharing my knowledge, experience and tried and tested strategies and templates so you leave the course feeling confident in how to set up and deliver Canicross Training to pet dogs and their owners.

I first started Canicrossing back in 2016 as a focus during a difficult time in my life. I quickly fell in love with exploring the countryside with my dogs and the feeling of just ‘being in the moment’ spending time together. Canicross soon became my safe haven to escape daily stresses and clear my head and most of all, my dogs loved our adventures too! The Canicross addiction stuck and I now regularly run up to 10 mile distances with my rescue Collie X Husky Blue and also try our paw in the odd race here and there too.

After experiencing the benefits of Canicross myself first hand, in early 2018 I went on to qualify as a Certified Canicross Trainer so I could share my passion for the sport and safely introduce other dog and owner teams so that they could get the support and guidance needed to have the confidence to get out running together with their dogs too. Since then, I’ve successfully set up and ran both 1-2-1 and group Canicross coaching as well as my own Canicross club in North Yorkshire.

In 2021 I became Head Canicross Instructor at Sporty Paws and co-founder of the Sporty Paws Certified Canicross Instructor Course which has been designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to set up and run your own Canicross Training Business.

I’m a big believer that anyone can take part and enjoy Canicross and that it’s not about how far or fast you can run, but about how much fun you have along the way together. I look forward to helping you spread this message and the unique sport of Canicross to dog and owner teams in your area too!

FAQs

  • Who is the course for?

You must have basic Canicross experience and have a willing dog in harness.

This course is ideal for anyone wishing to offer Canicross training as a new business venture or as an additional service to an existing business. Alternatively it is also suitable for Canicross Clubs and Groups who want a representative within their group who is trained to correctly fit equipment and teach the correct methods

  • Will I need to bring my dog on the course?

Yes, the course is a mixture of both practical and theory so you’ll need to bring your dog to the course.

Your dog needs to be comfortable running in harness and be happy to settle in your vehicle during the thoery parts of the course. The venue is private and your vehicle will be parked closeby whilst we do the classroom sessions. You’re welcome to check on your dog at any time. The maximum length running route during the course will be a 5K (or less) route.

If you’re unable to bring a dog, please contact us prior to booking on to the course so we can see if we can make alternate arrangements for you.

  • Is there a payment plan available?
Yes! Please get in touch with us to discuss this further.
  • Is overnight accommodation included in the course cost?

No. You will need to arrange your own overnight accommodation for the duration of your stay.

Your kit bag includes 7 different sizes of Sporty Paws short Canicross harnesses, 1m and 2m bungee lines and 2 waist belts. All in a colour of your choice.

Please note: Not all dogs will be suited to one harness style due to their running style/needs, therefore you may need to purchase additional kit after the course to add to your kit bag to accommodate your clients needs.

  • What age does my dog have to be to attend?

Dogs must be fully grown to participate in Canicross due to it being a high impact sport. This is to avoid damage to the dogs bones, joints and growth plates whilst they are still growing. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about canicross and how to advise new canicrossers on the correct harnesses for their dogs.
Emma has a wealth of knowledge and presented the course in a very informal manner.
Emma is very friendly and patient and answered all our questions to her best ability.
I feel confident now in advising clients about their dog’s harnesses and waist belts.

This has been a fantastic course in an amazing venue. Emma has distilled as much of her knowledge as possible into the two days, and I now feel confident in fitting kit, advising clients on appropriate equipment, and running my first classes. Emma is friendly, approachable and patient and she teaches in a way that makes the subject completely relatable even for a novice. As well, the kit that comes with the course is everything I need to set up as a Canicross instructor and will give me a great start until I can build a larger collection on my own. Nobody looking to start running their own Canicross classes will regret booking this course.
